Open House – Business License Fees

The City is completing the 2019/2020 budget.   Historically, the City has relied heavily on sales tax revenue to account for around a third of its revenue. Due to evolving buying behaviors and changes in how sales taxes is credited to cities, the City has seen a flattening of sales tax revenue, and projects a $3 million shortfall for the 2019-2020 biennium. The City has already reduced spending by 3% for most departments, and 1.5% each for Police and Fire. Nearly 60% of the City’s revenue supports the critical public safety functions of Police, Fire, and Public Works. In order to avoid reductions to these critical public safety services, the City is considering increasing business license fees to offset the loss of sales tax revenue.
