Public Defender Services

Those charged with a criminal offense may be eligible for a public defender, subject to financial qualifications. All people who have been charged with a crime in the Tukwila Municipal Court that cannot afford an attorney may request a public defender. Applications are available at the Tukwila Municipal Court or fill out the application here.

Public Defender screening takes place on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Tukwila Municipal Court. Please complete the application and bring copies of all supporting documentation. A Public Defender will be assigned if all qualifications are met. For any questions about Public Defender screening please call (206) 433-1858 on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. For all other Court questions please call the Court Clerk’s Office at (206) 433-1840 Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Clients of Public Defenders have important rights. The Washington State Supreme Court has adopted standards for the conduct of public defenders and guidelines for the services provided by a public defender. The Clients Rights notice is provided to all clients of public defenders. Please read this document carefully.

Comments or Complaints

Public Defenders can help with any complaints. If the public defender is unable to help, complete a Comment Form or Complaint Form and submit them to the City Administrator’s office at City Hall or by email to publicdefense@tukwilawa.gov.
