The City of Tukwila is pleased to announce the 2017 Tukwila Business Recycler of the Year winners – CASCADE VIEW ELEMENTARY AND JELD-WEN!
This year the selection committee chose two winners, since each had very impressive waste reduction and recycling achievements.
CASCADE VIEW ELEMENTARY is a public school with approximately 500 students. Elizabeth Florez and her 4th grade class worked with Ivan Kistol, Head Custodian, and Principal Jeffrey Baker to boost school recycling and to launch food scrap composting in the cafeteria. As a result, they doubled the amount of material collected for recycling and composting, keeping it out of the landfill. In one year, they collected 50 cubic yards of compost, which is the same amount that would fill more than half of a school bus! Their recycling rate is fifty-four percent!
JELD-WEN is a coatings company in operation since the 1960s. More information can be found on their website www.jeld-wen.com.
JELD-WEN is able to recycle fifty percent of all materials. Dale Williams, plant manager, also has an aggressive reuse program. Materials like bags, super sacks, industrial materials, and totes are all reused to prevent waste.
The City of Tukwila has been selecting a Tukwila Business Recycler of the Year since 2006. Previous recipients include: Protime Sports, Sahale Snacks, Mighty O Donuts, King County Housing Authority, Rainier Industries, United Stationers, Grainger, Complete Office, Red Dot, Starfire Sports, Shasta Beverages and Pacific Metals.
