Comprehensive Plan 2024-2044 Update

Tukwila’s Comprehensive Plan is a policy document that describes how the City will manage its growth and provide necessary services and facilities over a 20-year planning horizon.  The Comprehensive Plan receives a major update every ten years as required by state law.  The current Comprehensive Plan was adopted December 16, 2024.

The periodic update of the Comprehensive Plan requires a thorough review each element of the Plan to ensure it reflects new laws and requirements, as well as provides responses to changing conditions within the community.

Review the Adopted Plan:   The City Council adopted the 2024-2044 Comprehensive Plan on December 16, 2024.

MIDDLE HOUSING CODE AMENDMENTS

By June 30, 2025, Washington communities that adopted their Comprehensive Plans in 2024, must adopt new regulations to encourage the development of more housing to address the housing crisis in Washington.

The Planning Commission held a Public Hearing on the proposed amendments on April 24th and voted to forward the amendment package to the City Council for adoption.

Critical Issues the 2024 Plan Update Addresses

The 2024 update of the Tukwila’s Comprehensive Plan is similar to the 2015 Plan, however, this Plan update focuses on several issues that will be critical to the community over the next 20 years:

HOUSING – how can the City support and encourage the development of affordable housing that addresses the needs of all Tukwila’s residents – at all income levels, for families of all sizes, for specialized needs, etc.

CLIMATE CHANGE & COMMUNITY RESILIENCE – how can the City and community adopt practices and implement procedures and projects that protect our quality of life as environmental conditions change.  As a part of this issue, how can we protect and enhance our natural resources and environment so future generations can also enjoy these special parts of Tukwila.

EQUITY – It is important that City resources and services support all parts of the community.  The Plan will help ensure that Equity is considered as the City selects its priorities.  For this reason, the City is prioritizing ensuring that all communities within the City have the opportunity to share their ideas about what Tukwila should look like in the future.
